ATLAS Art feature at Highland festival of creativity

Scotland’s leading creative industries conference and showcase, XpoNorth takes place this week at Eden Court in Inverness.

At this free two-day event, expected to attract over 2000 delegates from across the UK and beyond, Isle of Skye based arts organisation ATLAS Arts will showcase artworks by David Lemm, Renè Jansen and J. Maizlish Mole.

Shona Cameron, Producer at ATLAS said, “At XpoNorth we will be showcasing our current ATLAS Editions. We are also available to talk about two projects in development – a silver fish slice by eminent Scottish artist, Will Maclean, and a silk scarf inspired by plants of Skye by Caroline Dear.

“ATLAS Editions encourage artists to consider the purpose and form of contemporary souvenirs. Working closely with the commissioned artists, we support their professional development with the opportunity to expand their skills or explore new sources of inspiration.

“All proceeds of works sold are reinvested into ATLAS’ programme. This allows us to continue to produce and commission contemporary art that creates connections between artists and audiences, and respond to the unique qualities of this region, its landscapes, its culture and its people.”

Featured in the showcase is a suite of three prints by Dutch artist based in North Uist, René Jansen. The work focus on ‘an alternative, inconspicuous beauty that exists within the wider scenic splendour of the Skye landscape.’ Entitled ‘Within View’, this series comprises three photographs taken on the Isle of Skye at different locations across the island, each identified by their geographical coordinates.

Edinburgh based David Lemm’s postcard set, ‘Landshapes’ depicts his ascent of a Cuillin mountain. Lemm was commissioned to explore The Cuillin, the spectacular mountains in the Isle of Skye, and create an artwork. Thinking about the mountain as a whole, rather than just the summit, Lemm chose to climb Sgurr Alasdair, which at 3,255 feet is the highest island summit in the United Kingdom. This experience provided the inspiration for ‘Landshapes’, a limited edition series of seven hand screen printed postcards depicting his journey.

Available to view throughout the event will be two digitally printed maps, A Walk Around Portree and Every Road on the Isle of Skye by Californian artist, songwriter and bandleader, J. Maizlish Mole. By incorporating elements of local oral knowledge and culture into the map, the works function as playful navigational tools for the Isle of Skye as a whole, and the town of Portree in particular. They show how locations can be brought to life through the eyes of people who live there and visit.

Shona added, “At XpoNorth, we will also be on hand to talk about ATLAS’ work in a more general sense, including upcoming open film submission as part of Screen-It, our regular film screening programme, and current project Ceumann // Footsteps. We have also just released information on a new commission launching in September, with Cooking Sections, called CLIMAVORE: On Tidal Zones.”

ATLAS ARTS is an itinerant arts organisation based in the Isle of Skye. Through commissions, socially engaged projects, exhibitions, cultural exchanges, residencies, workshops, educational programmes and projects that strongly connect communities, the organisation celebrates and explores the specificity of place within a local, national and international context.

XpoNorth takes place at Eden Court Theatre and venues throughout Inverness on Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th June 2017. It is free and is open to all to attend.
